Europe has launched the first test satellite of its Galileo navigation system, designed to rival the reigning US system and put positioning by satellite into civilian hands.

The satellite, a major step forward for Europe's answer to the United States' Global Positioning System satellites, took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
